"THALASSA. Portolano of Psychoanalysis" is a production of "Frenis Zero" revue (Dir. Giuseppe Leo) and it would be an attempt to link psychoanalysts and psychotherapists, belonging to the Mediterranean countries. Why would we put the Mediterranean Sea at the centre of attention of psychoanalytic culture? Because it continues keeping , in spite of a time of globalisation of human, cultural and economic exchanges, a central role of hinge between West and East, between cultural patterns dramatically faced with the contemporary problem of sharing universalizable patterns of "humanitas" and civilization. Psychoanalysis, with its group and mass-psychology functioning theories, can help in understanding the anthropological transformations concerning human societies and social institutions in the contemporary world. Our preminent interest is focused on the transformations regarding the cultural "koiné" that has been historically configured as mediterranean, and, moreover,  on the way psychoanalysis can provide interpretative means to investigate them thoroughly. Linking each other  psychoanalysts who, in spite of their different professional backgrounds, share a common belonging to the same cultural milieu, means consulting those who think about such changes from a point of view in which psychoanalysis keeps a preminent role. The means to create this link  would be the traditional ones (through international congresses and colloques), but also those provided by  internet and new communication technologies. "THALASSA.

Responsable Scientifique : Ariane Bazan
Argument

ON SELF AND SELF AWARENESS

Given that sensory inputs generate but a fractured representation of universals, the issue of perceptual unity concerns the mechanisms that allow these different sensory components to be gathered into one global image. In recent years, this has been described as ‘binding’, to be implemented by temporal conjunction. Because the number of possible categories of perceptions is so extensive, their implementation via purely hierarchical connectivity, where a single grandmother neuron or a small group of such neurons represent specific elements of a category, is very unlikely.

Presently, non-invasive technology, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG), with a time resolution of 1000 images/second, can serve as a direct window into brain function in relation to cognition, and as an “online” biological marker to illustrate the effect of psychotherapy on abnormal brain function.

c) AFFECTIVE NEUROSCIENCE SEMINAR WITH JAAK PANKSEPP AND DOUG WATT IN PUERTO VALLARTA - DECEMBER 2012

Presentation: We are offering a neuroscience seminar this coming December 2012, in Puerto Vallarta Mexico, led by Jaak Panksepp and Doug Watt. We will cover and update much of Jaak’s original research and theoretical work in affective neuroscience on prototype emotions, with emphasis on the implications of affective neuroscience for psychiatry and psychiatric disorders, particularly depression, far and away our most common psychiatric issue. Implications for understanding other emergent affective phenomena such as empathy will also be reviewed in detail. There will also be a review of the biology of aging, the diseases of aging, their relationship to lifestyle variables, and the biology of Alzheimer’s disease as the major disease of aging with the greatest relevance for the brain/mind, with a concerted focus on prevention and lifestyle variables, and their impact on aging processes and related diseases.

Seminar participants will have a chance to meet Jaak, and absorb some of his truly encyclopedic knowledge about the brain. His seminal and classic 1998 textbook, Affective Neuroscience, is still widely regarded as the most comprehensive synthesis of information about emotion and the brain available. For those who have never had a chance to interact with Jaak or hear him speak (or who have and would appreciate further exposure to his work and thought), this is a unique and limited opportunity to meet and learn from one of the true giants of modern neuroscience and pioneers of affective neuroscience. Jaak is close to retiring, and after that, he will seriously cut back on his heavy traveling schedule, teaching, and other commitments, making these opportunities very scare indeed.

rated by attendees. If you are interested, please get back to me at DrDougWatt@gmail.com. We are accepting $500 deposits to hold space - those can be returned up to 90 days before the seminar, with full tuition due at that time. Refunds of full tuition (minus deposits) will be possible until December 1st.

Please read how Emotion Can Shut Down High-Level Mental Processes Without Our Knowledge, in Our Native Language

“Psychologists at Bangor University believe that they have glimpsed for the first time, a process that takes place deep within our unconscious brain, where primal reactions interact with higher mental processes. Writing in the Journal of Neuroscience, they identify a reaction to negative language inputs which shuts down unconscious processing.”

Entonces, ¿QUÉ ES UN TRASTORNO DE LA PERSONALIDAD?

Nuevas direcciones DSMV (Skodol & Bender, 2009)

Symposium 2012: On Loneliness
Goldwurm Auditorium Mount Sinai Medical Center
March 24, 2012

Loneliness is perhaps one of the most painful affective states a     person can experience. It is a subjective experience that most of us have had, at some point in our lives. It may be experienced as an intense emptiness or solitude, an isolation from others both internal and/or external.  Or, it can be experienced as grief; a loneliness in the presence of others.  It can be also be understood by its duration (e.g., temporary or chronic), or as Sartre noted, an essential feature of the human condition.  Sartre believed this condition arose from conflict between the need to create meaning in life and the awareness of isolation or nothingness in the universe. For a psychoanalyst this idea might translate into an infantile experience of needing the mother and becoming aware that she is not always available.

Chronic loneliness has been linked to physical (e.g., cancer, stroke, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease) and psychological (e.g., depression and schizoid pathology, impaired cognition and personal determination, sleep disturbance, suicide, alcoholism and substance abuse) difficulties.  As we can see from the variety of manifestations loneliness is often a complex phenomena in both its aetiology and presentation.

The aims of Symposium 2012 are to explore this vast domain from a broad psychoanalytic perspective.  Our introductory speaker, Lucille Spira, will open the day by framing the topic with a series of questions: Why is it so difficult for some people to find the connections that they say that they want? What makes people lonely?  Is it due to desire, a deep sense of longing for someone, or fear, the result of feeling unsafe, unloveable, or toxic?  Three panels will then provide a special emphasis on: Loneliness as revealed by the artists, the clinical dimensions of loneliness, and Loneliness/solitude in the Psychoanalytic Training Process.

We hope you'll come and join us in discussing this important topic.
